BOSTON (AP) — Former New England Patriots player and convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez is facing another criminal charge: witness intimidation, prosecutors said Monday.

Hernandez was convicted last month of killing Odin Lloyd, who was dating his fiancee’s sister, in June 2013. He also faces two counts of murder in Boston, where he is accused of gunning down two men in 2012 after one caused him to spill his drink at a nightclub.

    USA TODAY
Aaron Hernandez found guilty of first-degree murder

A grand jury indicted Hernandez on Friday on the latest charge, according to the office of Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley. It said the victim of the intimidation was a witness to the Boston killings, which happened on July 16, 2012.

“Hernandez allegedly shot him in the face on the morning of Feb. 13, 2013, and left him to die on the side of the road in Riviera Beach, Florida, after the witness made a remark about the homicides,” the office said in a news release.

Hernandez’s lawyers didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment on the new charge.

The district attorney’s office did not identify the witness, but it is clear from several other court proceedings that it is former Hernandez friend Alexander Bradley.

Bradley has sued Hernandez in Florida, saying that on Feb. 13, 2013, he, Hernandez and two other men went to a strip club in Miami. According to court papers, the two men got into an argument at the club and then again later. Prosecutors in the Lloyd case said in a filing made during that trial that Bradley then made “disrespectful remarks” about Hernandez.

    FOR THE WIN
The world reacts to the Aaron Hernandez murder verdict

“Shortly thereafter, the car pulled over in an isolated industrial area, where Bradley was shot between the eyes. The defendant exited the car and quickly dumped Bradley’s body on the ground before fleeing the scene,” a filing from the Bristol district attorney’s office said.

Bradley was found soon after by people who worked in the area and survived, although he lost an eye. He refused to cooperate with police at the time and no charges were brought in Florida.

While the shooting happened in Massachusetts, Conley’s office said that he may be prosecuted in Massachusetts because he is accused of willfully causing injury to a witness with the intent to impede a criminal investigation in Suffolk County.

Hernandez is serving a term of life in prison without the possibility of parole for Lloyd’s killing. The witness intimidation charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

An arraignment has not yet been scheduled for the witness intimidation charge. A hearing on the murder charges is scheduled for May 21, although Hernandez is not expected to be in court.

Google’s fleet of self-driving cars have traveled more than 1.7 million miles, collecting data about performance and sharing the road with manual drivers.

Along the way, they’ve also racked up a few dings — but by no fault of their own, according to the company.

No Driver, No Problem: How Google’s Self-Driving Car Transforms Travel

Blind Man Tests Google’s Self-Driving Car
With more than 20 cars in its fleet constantly being tested with safety drivers in the front seat, Google said the cars have been involved in 11 minor accidents resulting in light damage and no injuries.

“Not once was the self-driving car the cause of the accident,” Chris Urmson, lead of Google’s driverless car project, wrote in a Medium post today.

The self-driving cars are driven a total of 10,000 miles per week, mostly on city streets.

While software and sensors can help the cars take action faster than a human driver, Urmson wrote that “sometimes we won’t be able to overcome the realities of speed and distance; sometimes we’ll get hit just waiting for a light to change.”

With 360-degrees of awareness, the self-driving cars are gaining new insights into dangerous driving behaviors, including drifting lanes and red light running — both of which can contribute to accidents.

“We’ll continue to drive thousands of miles so we can all better understand the all too common incidents that cause many of us to dislike day to day driving,” Urmson wrote. “And we’ll continue to work hard on developing a self-driving car that can shoulder this burden for us.”

  3. http://www.telegraphindia.com/1150511/jsp/bengal/story_19363.jsp

Asansol, May 10: Narendra Modi and Mamata Banerjee today invested considerable political capital in laying the foundation of what looked like a compulsion-driven new equation between them.

But just like the twists and turns that dogged the IISCO plant that was modernised at considerable investments of public cash, the so-called bonhomie at Burnpur where the two leaders shared a dais had its share of shadow boxing.

Against the backdrop of acrimony between the Bengal chief minister and the Prime Minister, who were locked in a bitter war of words before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the 50-minute programme also confirmed Bismarck’s theory – “politics is the art of the possible” – as the two leaders competed to outperform each other in a game of rhetoric.

While Modi referred to the need to include the Bengal chief minister in his “Team India”, Mamata returned the favour by thanking the Prime Minister for inviting her to the inauguration. The Prime Minister talked about the Centre’s “act East policy”, while Mamata underscored the need for cooperation between the Centre and the state.

On the face of it, such comments projected a picture of fellowship but too much reliance on some of these expressions can be misleading.

Take for instance Modi’s opening remarks in which he subtly sent a message to Mamata that she should not try to claim credit for the project.

” Koi isko kahe, koi usko kahe, lekin aaj ka avsar to hum sabko garv denewala hai (Someone is talking about him, someone is talking about another person, but today’s occasion is such that it gives pride to all of us),” said the Prime Minister playing on the word “IISCO”.

There is little doubt that it was in response to Mamata’s statement, in which she said: “IISCO was on the verge of being privatised. When we were supporting the first NDA government from outside in 1998, we had demanded IISCO’s modernisation as part of the Bengal package…. The credit for this plant should go to the workers and people of this place.”

Behind the smokescreen of apparent bonhomie, both leaders had made several such comments, which indicated that they were trying to score political brownie points over each other during their speeches.

Unlike in the past, neither Modi, who spoke for around 24 minutes, nor Mamata, who wrapped up her speech in eight minutes, openly attacked each other as they had done before.

Aware that his stance today was different from that of the past, the Prime Minister offered a justification. “Ahead of the elections, the political parties were after each other. Even I was launching attacks and was also being attacked,” he said, without naming anyone.

Mamata was the most fierce critic of Modi in the run-up to the polls when she had described him as ” dangar mukh (face of riots)” before threatening to drag him by tying a rope around his waist. Modi had also poured vitriol as he kept asking her difficult questions about the price of her paintings and Trinamul leaders’ alleged involvement in the Saradha scam.

“Now, they cannot fight each other in public…. Both have compulsions,” admitted a BJP leader, before adding that Trinamul and the BJP had a history of “good relations” when they were together.

Mamata’s “compulsions” are not difficult to fathom. In spite of sharper judicial vigilance than earlier, allegations surface every once in a while that the CBI, which is probing the Saradha scandal under the order of the Supreme Court, remains a political tool in the hands of the government of the day. The CBI reports directly to the Prime Minister.

Besides, as Prime Minister, Modi has the power to decide the central largesse for states, and the cash-strapped Bengal government is badly in need of assistance from Delhi.

Similarly, Modi needs the support of Mamata to clear critical legislation in the Rajya Sabha, where the ruling alliance does not have a majority. The BJP-led government recently realised Trinamul’s worth when Mamata’s MPs supported bills on coal mining and pension.

Although Trinamul spin doctors have ruled out any understanding with the BJP, Trinamul’s change of stand on the goods and services tax (GST) bill has raised questions in Mamata’s close circle.

First, a uniform tax regime under the GST will rob the state of the right to incentivise investments and that may cost states like Bengal, which needs to compete with others to draw investors.

Second, how the tax proceeds – being a consumer levy, the goods and services tax will be payable at the point of consumption – will be shared between the producing and the consuming state still requires clarity.

“The state government was against the GST bill as the chief minister considered it to be anti-federal. But now, the differences have been settled,” said an official.

The Prime Minister today acknowledged the support of Mamata and others in clearing the constitutional amendment needed to swap territory held by Bangladesh and India on each other’s land. Mamata was earlier opposed to the land-swap agreement, saying the deal was against the interests of Bengal.

“If pending issues with foreign countries can be resolved with the spirit of Team India, just imagine how easy it will be to solve domestic issues,” said Modi as he tried to reach out to Mamata after floating the concept of “Team India” and offering her a key role in it.

The timing of the attempt to reach out to Mamata is significant. The Prime Minister faces more challenges in Parliament and his prestige is at stake over the land purchase bill, for which he needs either Trinamul’s direct support or abstention from voting when it is tabled in Parliament. So far, Trinamul has not shown any sign in public of diluting its opposition to the land bill.

“The Prime Minister and the Bengal chief minister were trying to fool people by attacking each other to show their differences…. Not only are they natural allies because of the past relations of Trinamul and the BJP, they have a lot of similarities in terms of their politics and their dictatorial approach. Now they need each other to pursue their respective vested interests,” said CPM politburo member Mohammad Salim.

For the CPM, the smiling pictures of Modi and Mamata may be a political asset but it is likely to dent the image of the Bengal BJP as an anti-Trinamul force.

“Yes, it will be difficult for us for some time as it will be impossible to go all out against the chief minister,” said a BJP leader, before expressing his hope that the compulsions to hold Mamata’s hands will subside over the next few months and the BJP will be ready to take on Trinamul in next year’s Assembly elections.

Asked about Modi’s silence on Saradha, state BJP chief Rahul Sinha said: “There is a thing called decorum. It would not have been right for a visiting Prime Minister to rake up a controversial issue like Saradha in the presence of the chief minister.”

Mamata’s compulsions, however, are not expected to ebb soon.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) – The Ministry of Health has been praised for its role in coordinating the eight-day visit to Jamaica by the United States Naval Hospital Ship Comfort, from May 6 to 13.

This commendation has come from Officer in charge of the Comfort’s medical site located at the National Indoor Sports Centre, Captain Andrew Nelson.

Speaking with JIS News, Captain Nelson explained that the engagement with the Ministry has been fairly smooth, based on the structured approach taken to the ship’s visit.

“Compared to some of the other stops, Jamaica is fairly sophisticated. They have a good infrastructure, a well delineated medical health system with people who communicate very well, and they’ve interacted with us a lot to coordinate this effort. Those people we’ve interacted with seem to really know their jobs and know Jamaica’s needs” he explained.

The officer pointed that it is more favourable to go into areas that have sound medical infrastructure, especially in the event that patients need referrals for follow-up treatment and care.

“The organization here is great, because if we spot something that is unusual or serious and needs more sophisticated care, then the Ministry of Health is here on location. So referring that patient is very easy” he added.

Captain Nelson, who is also a physician, said on the team’s first day ashore during the setup phase, the Ministry’s Director of Emergency, Disaster Management and Special Services (EDMSS), Dr Melody Ennis, visited the site to outline her expectations, and apprise the visiting medical personnel of the local team’s capabilities.

Captain Nelson further explained that his team also had to work through the best ways of ensuring that the proper documentation procedures for their engagements were undertaken, without slowing down the flow of patient screenings.

“We want to see patients; but at the same time we want to be responsible and make sure that the paper work is done. So we had to figure out how to appropriately do that within the Jamaican system,” he indicated.

Captain Nelson added that Ministry of Health volunteers were working alongside USNS Comfort’s registration team, and that the Senior Medical Officer for the South East Regional Health Authority, Dr Heather Reid-Jones, was on site to help in coordinating her team’s activities, as well as identifying the key point persons for referrals.

“It is very helpful to know who the ‘go-to’ persons are in the different areas. So having her physically present to make that person to person interaction is great,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Ennis has described the collaboration with the USNS Comfort’s team as a “fantastic experience.”

“We have a well established framework for our service delivery, so we have not had much of a challenge to integrate with the USNS team. The Ministry of Health welcomes the partnership, and this is just another indication of the solid link that exists between Jamaica and the United States,” she said.

“The added component to this mission is the subject matter expert exchange, which is the intellectual academic exchange of best and promising practices. At the same time they share with us the next steps (in) technology. The interaction among professionals is welcome and gives us a chance to see where we are positioned in the global picture of health, and based on the feedback, Jamaica is right there with our international counterparts” she added.

The EDMSS Director said the USNS Comfort team’s endorsement is a boost to Jamaica’s health care system, and thanked the local stakeholders partnering with the Ministry to facilitate the visit.

They include: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade; Jamaica Information Service (JIS); Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF); Jamaica Defence Force (JDF); Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB);Jamaica Red Cross; Food for the Poor; Rotary Club; Mustard Seed Communities;, Independence Park Limited; Kingston Container Terminals (KCT); Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ); Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA); Help Age International; Lions Club of Mona; the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA); and Wisynco.

The vessel’s visit forms part of a six-month humanitarian mission across the Caribbean region.

While berthed in Kingston, the ship’s medical team is expected to see several hundred patients daily between two medical sites established at the Maxfield Park Health Centre, and the sports centre

The sites are open to the public from 9:00 am each day with services being offered including: optometry, dentistry, general medicine, women’s health, paediatrics, and pharmaceutical dispensing.

“I released the song on the 19th of January, via Crush Road on YouTube, then couple days after, in fact the 22nd of the same month, Gage released a song, also called Evil Again, which mirrored the lyrics of my song,” he said.

The artist said his team approached Gage about the song. However, Gage decided to go on Instagram and rant and even called him (Don André) a copycat. The artist has since released a diss song aimed at Gage called Walking Dead. http://jamaica-star.com/thestar/20150210/ent/ent1.html

Groupies are the heart, soul and necessity of our business. I love them. These are people who go beyond the norm to let you know they appreciate what you do. How many sensible people would be up at 3am standing outside a hotel window shouting adoration? I wouldn’t. I’d be getting some sleep.
Michael Jackson was the silliest guy I ever met. He liked to trigger attacks of laughter at inappropriate times. I remember watching a dignitary giving a speech, and he looked over and started giggling… that just set me off. That to me was who he really was. What we saw later was a product of the failure of the rest of his life. The guy I knew was just funny and silly.
